My name is Kristín Maríella and I have a passion for reading, thinking, writing and talking about all things concerned with RIE® or what is often known as Respectful Parenting.
I have two children under the age of four, live in the tropical city of Singapore, am a classical violinist and the co-founder of the jewelry brand Twin Within.
I’m an impulsive “do-er” led by passion. If something fascinates me then it will most likely occupy my mind completely and that’s exactly how it was with respectful parenting.
I first got to know about the RIE® approach in the summer of 2014, when my daughter was about six months old and I immediately related very strongly to what the approach stands for. It was the case of the more I read, the more I liked it. Then, when I started seeing the immensely positive effect of respectful parenting on my daughter, myself and the whole household I knew there was no turning back.
To me, RIE® is simply magic, the approach itself works like magic, the household’s happiness index gets magically high and the change of attitude that occurs when we adopt the RIE mindset makes us start seeing children and their way of being in a new light and previously hidden magic of our children will suddenly start unfolding right in front of us.
My goal is to help parents build a healthy relationship with their children, a relationship that both parents and children can enjoy with sincerity, a relationship that is based on respect, trust and connection.
Kristín Maríella studied classical violin and viola performance at the Boyer School of Music and Dance at Temple University, USA. Shortly after her studies, she co-founded the jewelry collection Twin Within with her sister Áslaug Íris. After Kristín moved with her family to Singapore she studied to become a doula and before long, she created the Facebook group “Mæðra tips” (mother’s tips) where she began to frequently post articles, research and her own thoughts and short blogs about pregnancy, birth and respectful parenting.
Kristín has for many years worked as a violin teacher for young children and founded child led music and movement appreciation class for young children (0-3 years) named Moving Music with her colleague Kristín Björg, who is an educated occupational therapist and a dance therapist.
In 2016 Kristín attended several Respectful Parenting workshops in Singapore, two of them with RIE® associate Elsa Chahin, president of Pikler/Lóczy USA. In 2017 Kristín got finished RIE® Professional Development, Foundations, course in Beijing where she studied under Ruth-Anne Hammond former president of the RIE® Institute who is now currently Kristin’s mentor.
The parenting approach I practice and write about is inspired by Magda Gerber’s RIE approach and respectful parenting in general. If you would like to educate yourself further on this approach I highly recommend these books: ‘Your Self-Confident Baby’ & ‘Dear Parent: Caring for Infants with Respect’ – Magda Gerber, ‘No Bad Kids’ & ‘Elevating Child Care’ – Janet Lansbury and ‘Respecting Babies – A New Look at Magda Gerber’s RIE Approach’ – Ruth Anne Hammond
